Process


Introducing the Project

  1. Introduce the tasks (3/3)
  2. Teams select country for research (3/3)
  3. Introduction to wikispaces (3/4)
  4. Begin to create your team's wikispaces (3/5)
    1. One student willng use the CIA world fact book find your country’s map and import it to your site.
    2. A second student should copy the following from the CIA world fact book:
      1. Copy, paste and cite the “Background” info. on your country.
      2. Copy, paste and cite the following vital statistics:
        1. Infant mortality rates
        2. Life expectancy rates
        3. GDP (Gross Domestic Product) per capita (how much the average person produces per year—in U.S. dollars
        4. Population below the poverty line
        5. Transnational Issues
    3. A third team member will visit Amnesty International, find your country, review and record some of the human rights issues your country is currently facing.
    4. A fourth team member will visit the Resources page on the American Empire home site and begin researching using some of the listed resources.

Research

  1. Each team will be given a primary resource (a reading, and/or web resource) that is to be the back-bone of your research.
  2. Each team member must read the entire primary resource in #1 above, and will be quizzed on the reading on Monday, 3/10.
  3. In addition your team must incorporate a minimum of three additional resources: at least two from the Resources page and another of your choice.

Developing Your Wikispace

  1. Create initial wikispace and homepage (due Wednesday, 3/12 by midnight). Team members will be given individual grades for this stage of the project. Therefore, the below tasks should be evenly distributed. For the sake of uniformity, the homepage should be laied out as follows:
    1. Top: country name in "Header 1" format.
    2. Below country name will be your horizontal navigation bar (links to all pages). The navigation bar should be identical on every page in your site.
    3. Create all pages necessary (no text is required. You will only need to create the navigation bar accross the top).
    4. Next: a map of your country on the right side of your page, with a bullet point summary of U.S. involvement in your country (based on the primary resource) on the left.
    5. Place the "Background" information from the CIA world fact book below your summary.
    6. At the bottom of the page, list the "Vital Statistics."
    7. Create all of the necessary pages that your site will require, and link those pages to the navigation links in "2." above.
    8. Imbed links in your summary ("3." above) to the pages associated with the bullet points.
  2. Continue to supplement you research (see Web Links) (3/12-3/18)
  3. Add all additional research, images, audio, video links, etc. to wikipages. Your completed wikispace is due on Wednesday, 3/19 by midnight.

Presentations

  1. Present final research (3/25-3/28)
    1. All team members must present.
    2. Presentations should be strictly focused on CIA and military involvement in the country studied.
    3. All presentations should begin with a one to two minute introduction that tells the audience what we are going to hear about. This introduction must be concise and focused on the key justice issues regarding U.S. involvement in your country.
    4. Each presenter may use no more than one 3"x5" note card during the presentation.
    5. Presenters must have their attention focused on the class, and may only occassionally glance at their wikispace on the SmartBoard.
